May as well go for the AMG at that point.

Well that depends on what your reasons are for buying, someone who was originally interested in the 350D was interested in it for a good reason, that reason being very different from someone who wants a 63 S.

If you're in this for the long term and need a commute then of course the 350D will be it.

End of the day, both models attract very different buyers.

When it comes to engines, everyone goes with a certain one for very specific reasons. No one goes in looking for a diesel and decides "yeah, why not, this gasoline engine is good enough, we'll take this one"

In a case like this, being a diesel, just the ability to have a long distance commuter with great range is enough to justify the purchase. Yes you might be paying more up front but 4-5+ years into ownership you'll tank yourself.
