Tuner Weistec Engineering is known within the Mercedes-Benz community for its high-performance aftermarket parts and the company has now announced that it will field a pair of AMG GT3 race cars in the upcoming 2016 Pirelli World Challenge series. Powered by a high-revving 6.2-liter naturally-aspirated V8 engine, the Mercedes-AMG GT3 race cars will benefit from Weistec Engineering’s experience from tuning Mercedes and AMG engines over the years for its customers.
Instead of using the road-going AMG GT’s 4.0-liter V8, the German automaker opted to re-use the 6.2-liter V8 mill from the previous SLS GT3 race car. Performance is around 500 horsepower although rules and regulations will detune that based on the race series.
More information on the team’s campaign will be released in the coming months, including its driver lineup.

anyone know if they're going to WEC?
NO idea but they will bring two AMG GT3's to the 2016 Pirelli World Challenge.
Now would be the best time for BMW to join the WEC because the Volkswagen Group could withdraw from World Rally Championship and World Endurance Championship racing due to the diesel scandal.
Less competition for everyone else.

VW is considering dropping sponsorship in football leagues, and I would imagine something like racing would be a similar type of endeavour. Being how big they are I thought they would have money to throw at this, although it would be a big setback. Involvement in the above works as a good form of marketing to them... best for them to focus on paying themselves first than to cut cost.
They won't sink because of this but it'll put quite a large dent in their cash reserves. I think they set aside 6 billion but it could end up costing them more than that.
