Thank you very much for your post. I bought a 2017 GLE earlier this month, and it has the same irritating exhaust noise related to the engine RPMs. I plan to talk to my dealer in Houston but anticipate they will say the noise is normal. (The salesman has already told me he is not aware of any complaints about the exhaust system.) I would like to be armed with irrefutable proof that Mercedes Benz's is rectifying the problem at no expense to the car owner when I take the car back to the dealer. Could you possibly post a picture of your invoice showing the work done on your car? Do you have any more information regarding this problem since your earlier post? Thank again.

i took delivery of our new 2016 GLE 350 and instantly noticed a high pitched whine which i was told was normal exhaust noise and i would not even notice it. Well 650 miles later i am ready to dump the car. does anyone have the same issue? know of a fix? My wife loves the car otherwise. I have been back to the dealer and emailed Mercedes
I had the same problem with a 2017 model. Complained to MBUSA GAC, got the "its normal" response. Took them to task under Georgias Lemon Law. Car has 1200 miles. Last Thursday my dealer replaced a muffler and some other parts. Whine is GONE. Don't let them tell you it's normal or there is no fix.

I too am going insane with this high pitch exhaust/muffler noise. My dealer tells me it's normal but I find it hard to believe that MB would release a product with such problem and not addressing it. I've now put on 2000 miles and almost want to take a hit and terminate the lease early. If anyone with the same problem had resolved the issue please please share with us the solution. Thanks!
It is an exhaust problem. Mercedes fixed my problem after I started action under Georgia's Lemon Law. Replaced a muffler and other exhaust parts.

1600 RPM whine.

Had this problem with my 2017 GLE350. MBUSA and dealer told me it was normal. I started proceedings under Georgia's Lemon Law and guess what? The week before Christmas my dealer called to schedule a repair appt. last week they replaced a muffler and some other exhaust parts and the noise went away. That whine was so annoying no way was I going to live with it. Don't give up. Thy will fix it.

Jnorris541 - Would you mind posting more information about the specific repairs that took care of your exhaust noise? Or tell us which Georgia dealership you dealt with? Thanks!

Purchased my 2017 GLE 350 12/29/16. Noticed engine/transmission noise at low RPM's when going throw D1,D2,D3...etc. I looked at the tail pipes under the car and you can clearly see that the tail pipes do not extend far enough to permit the noise to out the openings in the back fender. When in the cabin you can hear the engine noise and the sound of the transmission humming and shifting. I have owned Lexus and Cadillac and never experienced this type of noise. For a $65K price tag and a Mercedes you would expect better performance.

I just got back from driving to Florida and rented a Chevy Suburban and drove it for 10 days.... cabin was quiet and never heard the engine/transmission. When I got home and jumped in to my new Mercedes, I could not believe the difference in the engine/transmission noise....... so much more in the GLE vs a Chevy.....really?

Have appointment at dealership, we'll see what they say. Got great feedback from this forum. Anyone that has more dealership fixing the problems, please share as it will help us all! Thanks

Took my GLE to the dealer today.... explained the issue with exhaust sound and showed them this forums multiple reports of similar problems. They said a tech would drive the car and they would call me. I was fully prepared for a long drawn out process to get this issue resolved. They just called and said Mercedes acknowledges that there is a problem and that they have ordered a new muffler system that will be here by Tuesday. Amazed at how easy this was! Will post when work is completed and the exhaust system sounds.

Picked car up today. The car sounds great as all of the annoying sounds are gone. The muffler was replaced with the exhaust pipes that curve down which defeat the resonating sounds that were created in the bumper portals. All work was covered under warranty. One has to wonder if Mercedes will create a recall for all of the GLE 350's that have been sold.

ps.. I was give a C300 as a loaner that had the exhaust that went straight thru the portals in the bumper and it did not have any of the annoying sounds that GLE had.....

Perfect! Thank you for explaining which parts they replaced!

I doubt they'll create a recall... they seem to just tell people it's normal until people realize it isn't... :|

Today I called Mercedes USA customer service to advise that exhaust sound problem was resolved by dealer installing a 2015 muffler system. Wanted to lodge complaint that I purchased a 2017 GLE and that German engineering solution was to use 2015 parts while I still have exhaust ports that are now holes in my bumper. Agent put me on hold and finally came back and said sound I heard was normal, but dealer accomadated me by using 2015 muffler system. THINK ABOUT THIS.... they admit no wrong engineering, however the dealer just decided to replace entire muffler system at a +$1000 warranty cost even though there is nothing wrong..... I just completed a JD Power survey and detailed the exhaust noise issue in the cabin and the poor response from Mercedes Corporate.

This was my first and LAST German Engineering Mercedes......... They have a serious engineering problem with their 2017 GLE 350 vehicle exhaust system and they will not step up to admit it and provide owners with a satisfactory solution. Individual state lemon laws.........stay tuned

This isn't the first model Mercedes Corporate are being ridiculous about. The GLC is going through some huge issues as well and MB is of no help... still. They're go to answer for everything is "it's normal" or they pretend there's just no issue at all, even after all of the complaints. I'm pretty discouraged from being an MB customer at this point as well, and I'm sure there are many more.

This is sort of why I like buying older models because a few years into the product being in the hands of consumers, there's a lot of issues that get worked out. Rather have a 2-3 year old model with minimal problems than something brand new with you know what!

GLE350 Exhaust Noise Solution
I recently purchased a 2017 GLE350. With the new car excitement, at first I failed to notice the annoying exhaust whine or moan at 1500 rpm. But when I did I felt I could not live with it. The dealership was no help and refused to concede that the car had a problem. Back at home I looked under the car and immediately deduced that the problem would be easy to solve. So with a little roofing flashing, two large hose clamps and ten minutes of time I cured my moaning GLE. The finished project is not the best looking thing but the car sounds perfect now.
The solution was to roll up about a 9" x 10" piece of aluminum flashing and slide it into the fake exhaust port from the outside. Then slide it on to the exhaust pipe and clamp it tight with the hose clamp. It may need to be adjusted to looked good. Then do the other side. See the attached pictures. I plan to take the car to a muffler shop and have a professional job done.
